097: Statue of Limitations

November 19, 2024

This writing stuff is hard! It’s surprisingly difficult to come up with a big reveal or even a ‘twist’ that would be impactful not only to the readers, but also the characters themselves. I have a general idea of where I want to take the series, but how and when I reveal some of the larger pieces of the puzzle is something I’ve been trying to figure out.

I hope this comic is impactful to the readers, and makes sense to the characters. We obviously know the characters aren’t real, but our suspension of disbelief allows us to pretend that within the story they are ‘real’. So in theory it’s at least a ‘minor’ reveal? A half twist?

The background really bothers me. It totally fits in with the rest of the backgrounds, and the walls and perspective came together super smoothly and easily. But isn’t this room just so terrible boring? It’s supposed to be like a treasure/throne kind of room, so there should be stuff everywhere, right? And yet, empty damn room. Also, way too big. I imagined it much much smaller but then this is what happened.

I think if/when we return here, and if I’m feeling ambitious then, the room will be much more full of stuff. And I’ll definitely do some lamp shading to explain it. I already know that the island is going to be somewhat of a conscious force, and will act and react from time to time.

I just hope this comic does what other great works do: engage the reader and encourage them to want to keep following these characters on their journey.

Writing is scary, but there’s a science to the art.
