043: A Goose’s Purpose
June 8, 2023
The amount of research I’ve done into our dear friend the Canada Goose is…probably too far. But it’s helping me shape the identity of the character, which is still a work in progress. I think all characters take a while to develop and come into their full and complete selves. Roy the robot doesn’t know much, but he’s got spirit (kid). Kevin is more experienced and has a more defined goals and is (usually) more cynical, but sometimes genuine. I can set either of them up against Sam’s stoic, wiser and older personality and highlight their individual personalities.
Once again, the background is so detailed I refused to re-draw it 3 times. I will someday set up real panels and framing and make it a real comic, but for now the ‘flat’ look is working for this initial series. I’m already working on a new ‘comic strip’ style but I don’t think it will affect this comic.
As with everything creative, you want guided evolution. Make conscious decisions to move the style in one direction or another, and allow yourself to try new things. In this comic, for instance, I’m trying a new way to draw the loop of the letter ‘D’. It’s an easier line for my hand, so I don’t care that it leaves a little nub on the top left of the main stroke.
