008: Attempted Meta

I definitely have a much larger concept for this comic in my back pocket, but I’m not sure how or when or if I should go about writing or drawing that. But there are plans!
I originally did this in blue, with the idea of changing the colours for every comic. I have come to quite love the two colours for this comic, and since I spent more time doing branding than comic strips, I just can’t avoid preferring the consistency. I may still occasionally change the colours, and I will definitely do some full-colour comics.
I hate drawing backgrounds. I always have. 95% of my personal sketching is characters or objects. I intentionally wanted a boring scene in the background, devoid of too much detail. The setting is an island, so while I work on my background skills I’m sticking to a lot of beaches, fields, and the occasional jungle scene.
The lettering is so much fun! I really try to keep it liberal, but I find myself redrawing the same letter time and again. Trying to follow the classic letterers like Ben Oda or Joe Rosen is kind of fun. I got really into the tools they used. I even purchased an old-timey plastic lettering guide! It took a few weeks, but I finally sort of got the hang of the techniques.
