076: Mystery Ink

It’s challenging to find the right balance of humour and plot when you only have four panels at a time. Sometimes the joke is the star, and sometimes the story get the spotlight. I think if you do it just right, you get a funny comic that pushes the narrative forward. Is that being exemplified with this comic? Probably not. But we try!

Still learning to draw Laurel consistently and well. I have been trying to draw women well since I was a teenager. I even took life drawing classes at one point. I still struggle with the underlying ‘structure’ of the human form. This comic is an attempt to get over that!

The cliché phrase “perfect is the enemy of the good” is actually helpful. If you are waiting to start your project until your skills are perfected, you will never start. You will never perfect your art if you are a true artist. That’s the real struggle. How do you create when you know you aren’t ever going to be as skilled as you want to be? Definitely helps me understand why so many artists are mentally unwell. We’re constantly fighting a losing battle and yet the need to create somehow lets us push past that and just keep working. Maybe that’s the true definition of an artist. Not being skilled, but recognizing you will never be as skilled as you demand of yourself but still making things anyway.

Artists never stop trying to improve their skill, and they don’t let that stop them from creating.
