005: Obviously flamethrowers.
August 14, 2022
I’m starting to make some decisions with this comic. The ‘newsprint’ style was starting to really work for me, and the two colour limitation was helping actually execute the thing. I think at this stage I was going to change the ‘secondary’ colour depending on the comic, to create some colour variety over time and also keep it looking fresh.
I originally intended to keep drawing the man with his hand all bandaged up, but I found it ultimately too depressing. Also I’m trying to get better at drawing hands and feet, so this sort of was defeating that and also adding work.
The sky is way too dark for that text, but I was/am still trying to avoid text bubbles. I prefer comics where the text just sits on the page and doesn’t stand out too much. See: Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbs.
At this point I was enjoying almost all aspects of the process. Writing was not flowing naturally (still isn’t), and I was able to execute the entire comic from sketch to final colours in about six hours. Not fast enough to do more than a few a week, even if I was motivated! But more than one a week sounded good based on my life and availability anyway.
