020: Confusing Confucius

January 9, 2023

First comic of 2023 was a pretty standard setup for the Sam/Roy dynamic. Nothing too strenuous. I set a goal of 40 comics this year—roughly one a week with some breaks for other stuff, like website building, writing, and writer’s block… (As of this writing in April 2023, I’ve done 14 comics in 14 weeks, plus the first version of this website!)

I tried to reverse their normal positions to mix it up. New year, new layout! It did not work. It might have worked for other jokes, but the way this one was written it definitely needed to be the usual arrangement. I fought it, and eventually just decided to go with it.

I like this jungle background!

I don’t know how comic strip authors come up with something for every day of the week. I think even with an abundance of ideas (5 ahead?) I don’t think I could do more than two comics in a single week. I suppose if I had a full-time salary I could justify a few days to think up a good series. But little observational jokes like this seven times in a single week? I feel like that would be boring and too formulaic. I never wanted that for this webcomic, but at the same time I do want a certain percentage of comics to just be throwaway nothing gags. Honestly most of these first few dozen comics are just warmups.

Keep iterating on your work as you go. It will settle into a formula, which you can lean into or break as you like.
