I think comedy comes in threes, and that’s just about as many times as I want to repeat the same joke. But it does help to have a ‘template’. I worked with Ryan North very briefly in 2003 when he first started Qwantz.com. It flew through the office email list.
I love the idea of the challenge of writing so many comics when the artwork has never changed. There’s like 20 years of content, and it’s all good! That has to be a Guinness World Record: “Longest Running Web Comic with the Same Layout”.
It doesn’t work for me—the whole point for me is practicing drawing and getting better at comic style illustration. But as a small nod, I want some repeatable gags. A “Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football” gag would be a grand slam home run for me.
