081: Re-Quest
June 26, 2024
By far one of those frustrating comics I have done in a while. It looks barely like what I pictured in my mind, and that makes me want to kick a dolphin. The backgrounds sort of turned out, but I just could not draw Laurel to save my life! Out of total time of ten hours, I think I spent two of those trying to draw her and failing.
When drawing people, it really does help to have a model for the basic poses. I should have started with that, but I thought after this many comics I could just draw her freehand. Not even close. No matter what I tried, the sketch never became the character. I threw out the final panel group shot and made Roy the focus. I think it works better for the joke anyway, and we did a couple establishing shots already.
Part of the ‘weekly’ nature of this comic means I have an unofficial deadline. Without it, I know I would have likely abandoned this project about five times already. It forces me to ‘just post something, anything’, and with that in mind I’m willing to post less-than-perfect art. Art without compromise is a great ideal, but the reality is your skill, time, or interest is going to wane.
