083: Riddle me what?
July 10, 2024
Might be my favourite comic so far? I say that tentatively because my favourite number is 83, and I like the payoff of this joke, having been set up way back in Comic #067. I actually didn’t figure out the solution to the riddle until I started this comic! I knew it would have something to do with the four singing, but I had to do some research to figure out which notes they would need to play. A-C-E-G sounds nice on the piano, and thankfully the letters appear in that order!
I don’t think anyone would have been able to figure it out pre-Laurel. But once the fourth character appeared I think it might have been obvious – minus the notes. I didn’t show it in detail until this comic. That font there is Trajan, designed by Carol Twomby based on text from actual ancient Roman columns! I wanted to make it more ‘carving’ but it just hurt the legibility too much. Get ’em on the next one.
Just shy of 10 hours on this one. And the only recycled sketches was the background, sort of. I managed to draw Laurel four times, and I didn’t completely hate it! I really need to work on her.
I’m going to take a long break after I finish #084. It’s the last ‘written’ comic, and the final 16 comics are one straight run to the finish line. Like a mini-comic within a comic? We’re trying it! It’s happening! But I need to take a break from the project and do some practice/research. In 83 comics I have yet to draw an interior! So that will be fun.
